Orthodontics for Children

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child see an orthodontist by age 7 to check for bite problems that only orthodontic records can identify. As a community service, Monacell Orthodontics provides free initial examinations and baseline records. No referral is necessary.

The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by the age of 7 and crossbites, crowding, and other problems can be evaluated. When treatment is begun early, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment.

Why does Dr. Monacell ask about your child’s sleep? Dr. Monacell understands the relationship between your child’s mouth and their airway. Studies have shown that narrow jaws are related to breathing and airway issues, especially during sleep. It is estimated that 25% of children with ADHD and other behavioral and developmental problems actually have symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Monacell’s treatment not only improves your child’s smile, but may also improve their sleep, breathing and overall well-being.
