While millions of people wear orthodontic devices with little or no trouble, occasionally patients will suffer an orthodontic emergency. These issues are more than a little soreness or discomfort and require fast attention to prevent injury or long-term treatment issues. At Monacell Orthodontics, we offer prompt attention to any issue our patients are having with their devices or oral health. If you have any questions, need assistance or would like more information about any orthodontic-related issue, we are here to help. When in doubt, call or text us at 804-746-0918. You matter to us.
While you may experience some tooth and/or jaw pain after initially getting braces or after a tightening, severe tooth and jaw pain is never normal. If your pain is interfering with your daily routine, call the office so we can arrange to see you as soon as possible. We will locate the cause of your pain and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment or appliance. Orthodontic treatment should not cause you physical distress.
If you have wire braces, occasionally a wire or bracket might come loose and cut the inside of your mouth. In other instances, you may receive a mouth injury while playing sports or from an automobile accident. In these cases, you should be evaluated by Dr. Monacell, both to check your injuries and to assess damage to your braces. If your braces are not quickly fixed, you may suffer more injuries. In addition, your braces or other appliance may be too damaged to treat your alignment issues, throwing your treatment plan off course.
Other physical issues may arise, such as mouth sores or gum infections. If your gums are bleeding or you find eating painful, you should check in with Dr. Monacell. He will determine if you need medical treatment for these issues and make adjustments to your braces if necessary.
