Phase 1 Interceptive Treatment

Children should be evaluated by an orthodontist by the age of 7, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. Recognizing that there is an orthodontic problem at an early age does not always result in the need for early treatment. But if there are growth or dental related issues, and early evaluation and treatment can prevent the need for more complicated dental procedures later, such as extraction of permanent teeth, headgear or jaw surgery.

For children that do need Interceptive or Phase 1 Treatment, Dr. Monacell now offers an Invisalign alternative to early braces with palatal expanders, Invisalign First!

Clear aligners are much more comfortable than braces and expanders. For parents who are wanting to avoid uncomfortable expanders for their child, this is a great option. There are no extra appointments to deal with pokey wires, and loose brackets. There are also no food restrictions because you remove them to eat. And there is no daily turning of the expander with a key and patients and parents really appreciate this!

Traditional expander appliances with braces may still be used for parents who want an option that is not removable.

Here is a list of some common teeth alignment problems to look for in your child:

• Excessive spacing
• Crowding
• Open Bite
• Deep Overbite (Front teeth cover more of the lower teeth than they should)
• Crossbite (Front or Back upper Teeth fitting to the inside of the lower Teeth)
• Underbite
• Excessive Overjet (The upper front teeth stick out more than 3mm from the lower front teeth)
• Impacted Teeth & Abnormal Eruption
